What is a CHNA?

A Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) is a systematic process used by healthcare organizations, public health agencies, and community partners to evaluate the health status and needs of a region. Covering Marion, Lewis, Monroe, Pike, Ralls, and Shelby counties in Missouri, it identifies key health challenges, gathers input from residents and stakeholders, and helps shape strategies for improving healthcare access and outcomes.

Why We Conduct the CHNA

The CHNA helps identify key health concerns and guides efforts to improve health services. Conducted every three years, this process leverages public input through surveys and stakeholder interviews to shape health priorities. Findings from the 2022 CHNA highlighted concerns such as mental health, workforce availability, and access to care, which will inform the 2025 assessment.

"The CHNA is an essential process for ensuring the health and well-being of our communities," says Wendy Harrington, Vice President, Development at Hannibal Regional. "By bringing together our local health departments, the United Way, and economic development leaders, we can better understand our residents' challenges and create impactful strategies to improve their quality of life."

The CHNA, which is completed every three years as part of Hannibal Regional Hospital’s nonprofit status, allows the community to play an active role in shaping health priorities through surveys and stakeholder interviews.

"The United Way of the Mark Twain Area is thrilled to partner with Hannibal Regional and our community health leaders to address the most critical needs in our region," shares Denise Damron, Executive Director of the United Way of the Mark Twain Area. "This partnership exemplifies our collective commitment to supporting the health and prosperity of the people we serve."

Maggie Strong of Strong Consulting, a Quincy, Illinois-based firm specializing in community development and strategic planning, has been engaged to lead the CHNA process and facilitate the creation of the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). The firm combines data-driven analysis with expert facilitation to ensure all voices are heard, and plans are widely supported.
