Internal Medicine Rural Residency Program

Our mission is to train a new generation of skilled and compassionate physicians who are committed to providing comprehensive healthcare to rural populations.

Hannibal Regional has received full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for a new Internal Medicine Residency Program set to launch in July 2026.  Our Internal Medicine Residency Program is uniquely designed to prepare physicians for the challenges and rewards of practicing in rural areas. Residents will gain experience in both hospital and outpatient settings, working closely with mentors who understand the specific healthcare needs of rural populations. This training provides a strong foundation in primary care, chronic disease management and preventive medicine, while also developing skills in other specialty areas.

A Mission-Driven Program Focused on Rural Healthcare

  • Targeted Training: gain firsthand experience in treating a broad range of conditions unique to rural populations, with a special focus on access to care, chronic disease management, and preventive medicine.
  • Community Impact: as part of a close-knit team, you'll have the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients and see the direct impact of your care on the community.

Personalized Residency Experience

  • Small Cohort Advantage: with four residents per year, we prioritize individualized mentorship, hands-on learning, and leadership opportunities.  Our residents receive close guidance from dedicated faculty members committed to nurturing each resident's strengths and professional goals.
  • Broad Training in General Internal Medicine: we emphasize developing well-rounded internists prepared for a variety of practice settings, from outpatient primary care to inpatient/outpatient medicine.

Collaborative, Supportive Faculty

  • Committed Educators: our core faculty are highly experienced in rural medicine and are dedicated to cultivating the next generation of rural health leaders.  Through consistent mentorship, faculty provide residents with clinical expertise, leadership, guidance, and research support.
  • Mentorship for Scholarship: engage in research and quality improvement projects that are meaningful for rural healthcare, with faculty support in design, analysis, and publication.

Hands-On Learning in a Rural Setting

  • Comprehensive Rural Health Training: from managing high-acuity cases in our community hospital to addressing chronic conditions in the outpatient setting, our residents develop confidence across a wide range of clinical skills.
  • Procedural Competence: since we have no other residents or fellows in our facility we can offer training in procedures that may be less accessible in larger programs.  We will also provide handheld ultrasound devices to be in used in every aspect of training.

Commitment to Resident Well-Being

  • Balance and Support: at Hannibal Regional, resident wellness is a priority.  Our program provides resources for work-life balance and access to wellness initiatives that support your personal and professional growth.
  • Thriving in a Rural Community: experience life in Hannibal, MO - a town known for its vibrant history, beautiful natural surroundings, and welcoming community.  Our residents enjoy affordable living and an inviting, supportive environment both inside and outside the hospital.
