There is a lot of confusion as to what is good and what is bad when it comes to heart health. One specific food that is a sure go-to for heart health is walnuts. Current health research on walnuts includes studies in the areas of cardiovascular health, cancer, diabetes, cognitive function, weight management and bone health. Walnuts are an extremely versatile whole food that can easily be incorporated into any lifestyle. Walnuts can be eaten on-the-go as is, or sprinkled on yogurt, oatmeal or salads. Add finely chopped walnuts to vegetables, grains, and baked goods. Add a heart healthy boost to your diet with an ounce a day of walnuts. Walnuts are the only nut with a significant amount of alpha-linolenic acid, the plant based omega-3 fatty acid. One ounce of walnuts (12-14 halves) provides a good boost of antioxidants including selenium, melatonin, gamma-tocopherol (a form of vitamin E), plus several polyphenols.
Tip: Roast walnuts in the oven before eating or using in recipes. This will help bring out their flavor. Spread walnuts on cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for about 10-15minutes, tossing halfway through.
