Hannibal Regional’s Exceptional Care Uncovers the Dangers of Kidney Dysfunction

3/7/2025

Adam Bevans was with his children at the Quincy Mall when he suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed in front of them, leaving bystanders and his family deeply concerned.

Quick-thinking bystanders stepped in to help. A store employee promptly called 911, while several teenage girls stayed with Adam’s children until emergency responders arrived. Adam was taken to the nearest hospital, where doctors ran initial tests. Despite the alarming incident, the results appeared normal, and Adam was sent home.

By the next morning, however, Adam’s condition had worsened significantly. Recognizing the urgency, his wife, Kate, brought him to Hannibal Regional’s Emergency Department. There, Emergency Medicine physician Dr. Richard Thomas took a comprehensive approach to uncovering the root of Adam’s health issues.

Through extensive testing, the team discovered a complex and dangerous situation: Adam had experienced a cardiac event, and his kidney function was severely impaired. Specialists from Hannibal Regional Medical Group, including Dr. James Tucker (Family Practice), Dr. Karol Rosner (Nephrologist), and Dr. Santhosh Mannem (Cardiologist), collaborated to diagnose the underlying cause. They determined that a severe urinary tract infection and kidney infection had placed immense strain on Adam’s kidneys, triggering a cascade of complications that affected both his heart and overall health.

Adam’s recovery required close monitoring, including heart monitoring, IV antibiotics, fluids, and extensive care from a multidisciplinary team. His kidney function, which had been critically compromised, took time to improve to a level deemed safe for discharge.

This ordeal underscores the critical role of kidney health in overall well-being. Poor kidney function can lead to cascading health issues, including cardiac stress and other severe complications. The Bevans family’s experience highlights the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for unexplained symptoms and the value of comprehensive, collaborative care.

Reflecting on the experience, Kate expressed deep gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Hannibal Regional. “From the doctors and nurses to the techs, housekeeping, and nutrition teams, everyone went above and beyond to give Adam the best care,” she said. “We are so thankful.”
