Dorian’s Life-Saving Journey: A Second Opinion That Made All the Difference

2/21/2025

Two years ago, Dorian Stewart of Hannibal, Missouri, began experiencing chest pains. She initially dismissed them as mild, describing a burning sensation in her chest that felt like heartburn. Despite her discomfort, Dorian didn’t think the symptoms warranted a trip to the ER.
However, with a family history of heart disease weighing heavily on her mind—her father and brother had passed away from heart attacks, and her sister had survived one—Dorian’s sister urged her to seek medical help.

Dorian reached out to her primary care physician at a different healthcare system, but the process felt slow and frustrating. It took over six weeks to see a cardiologist, and when she finally underwent testing, she failed all the tests. The cardiologist recommended stent placement but said she would have to wait another two weeks for the procedure.

Feeling uncertain, Dorian shared her concerns with her niece, who works at Hannibal Regional Medical Group (HRMG). Her niece encouraged her to get a second opinion with Dr. Santhosh Mannem, an interventional cardiologist at HRMG. Dorian was able to see Dr. Mannem the very next day.
After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Mannem immediately ordered a cardiac catheterization. The results were shocking—three of Dorian’s arteries were 100% blocked. The condition was so severe that Dr. Mannem insisted she remain hospitalized. Shortly thereafter Dorian underwent urgent open heart surgery.

Reflecting on her journey, Dorian says, “Had I followed the first doctor’s recommendation, I may not be here today. I am so thankful Dr. Mannem took charge and saved my life.”

After her surgery, Dorian completed cardiac rehabilitation at Hannibal Regional Hospital, which helped her rebuild her confidence and overcome her fear of raising her heart rate. The program inspired her to purchase a treadmill and commit to regular exercise, a routine she now enjoys.
Today, Dorian continues her care with Dr. Mannem, working closely with him to monitor her cholesterol and maintain her heart health. “I am so impressed by his knowledge,” Dorian shares. “It is very reassuring to know my heart is in good hands with Dr. Mannem.”
