Heartfelt Care: Bill’s Experience with Hannibal Regional’s Heart Center Team

12/27/2024

As a pastor and avid golfer, Bill cherishes staying on the move. However, when he began experiencing persistent chest pain, he turned to his primary care physician, who promptly referred him to Dr. Santhosh Mannem at Hannibal Regional Heart Center.

Thanks to Hannibal Regional’s commitment to accessible care, Bill was seen within a week. Initial tests revealed concerning results, and Dr. Mannem recommended a heart catheterization to better understand the extent of the issue. The procedure revealed two 80% blockages in major arteries, including the left anterior descending artery, often called the "widowmaker."

Given the severity and location of the blockages, Bill was referred to Dr. Jose Torres, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Hannibal Regional, for open-heart surgery. “It was a complete shock to hear that I needed open-heart surgery,” Bill recalls. “I had no prior heart issues or family history of heart disease.” However, after meeting Dr. Torres, Bill felt reassured. “He was very personable, and took the time to explain the procedure to me in great detail.”

Bill’s dedication to a healthy lifestyle made him an excellent candidate for a swift recovery. On October 22, 2024, he underwent successful open-heart surgery. Reflecting on his experience, Bill praises the exceptional care he received: “The CVICU staff were phenomenal. They were highly trained and incredibly caring.” He even received a surprise visit from CEO Todd Ahrens. “I was grateful to speak with Todd and express my gratitude for the top-notch care at Hannibal Regional. Everything was outstanding from the top down.”

Bill felt well-prepared for his discharge from the hospital, but once home, he found himself with questions about the recovery process. He decided to reach out to Dr. Torres for guidance. “It meant so much to me that he was available and willing to answer my questions when I called,” Bill shares. Since then, he has remained in close contact with his heart care team. “They’re always attentive, making sure I feel supported throughout my recovery.”

Now, Bill is actively participating in Cardiac Rehab three times a week to maintain his heart health. Looking ahead, he’s eager to return to his busy routine once he has fully recovered. “I’m working hard to make sure my heart’s ready for golfing season!” he exclaims.
