Shelbie Metcalf

Bucklin, Missouri

Shelbie Metcalf, of Bucklin Missouri, had tried various weight loss methods under her healthcare provider's supervision, but nothing worked. “I had been injured during my time in the military, and the combination of weight gain caused severe lymphedema in my legs,” Shelbie recalls. “When I could no longer lift my right foot, I knew I had to do something.” Her physical challenges were compounded by the emotional toll of feeling unable to be the mom she wanted to be. “I had no energy, couldn’t sleep, and felt myself sinking deeper into depression,” she said.

When Shelbie decided to explore gastric bypass surgery, she turned to Google to find the closest location. With Hannibal and Columbia, Missouri being an equal distance, she felt that she would get a more personable, one-on-one, experience at Hannibal Regional Weight Management Solutions. In September 2023, Shelbie had her first meeting with Dr. Mujeeb Siddiqui, Bariatric Surgeon at Hannibal Regional. Having seen her mother’s success with gastric bypass, she was confident this was the right choice for her. However, Dr. Siddiqui took the time to walk Shelbie through each available procedure and its potential side effects. “He made me feel informed and valued my opinion. Together we decided to move forward with gastric bypass.”

By October, Shelbie received clearance for surgery, and due to her documented weight loss attempts, her VA benefits covered the procedure. On December 19th, 2023, she underwent surgery and was home by the 20th. However, Shelbie experienced a few setbacks. On January 4th, 2024, she visited the Hannibal Regional ER with abdominal pain, where she was diagnosed with a postoperative ileus, a temporary slowing of gastrointestinal movement. After a few days in the hospital, she returned home. In February, Shelbie experienced more pain, leading to a simple procedure that revealed a small stricture, which was immediately treated. Through it all, Shelbie was grateful for Dr. Siddiqui’s care. “He was always two steps ahead, with a plan in place for every setback. He listened with genuine concern and always made me feel heard.”

Ten months post-surgery Shelbie has lost a remarkable 106 pounds. Her health has transformed—her leg impairment is gone, and best of all, she can finally run and play with her children. “Recently, I played laser tag with my boys, and it was the best feeling to see their joy. It’s something I couldn’t have done before,” Shelbie shared. She has also found a new confidence in herself, “I have fallen in love with fashion, shopping for clothes is one of my favorite things to do now!”

Despite some difficulties, Shelbie has no regrets. “This surgery gave me my life back—and it gave my kids their mother back. Dr. Siddiqui and the entire team were phenomenal. They were always empathetic, understanding, and never left me feeling alone. Even in the ER, they advocated for me and ensured I received the best care.”

To those considering weight loss surgery, Shelbie has one piece of advice: “Don’t let fear hold you back. The impact of untreated weight on your health is far worse than the risks of surgery. Reach out, ask questions, and take control of your health.”
